Metabolife Ultra and Losing Weight

By Elizabeth Myers, RD

Metabolife is a weight-loss supplement that was originally produced with ephedrine in it, but the new Metabolife, called Metabolife Ultra, is made without it. Because ephedrine’s use has been associated with heart attacks, strokes, seizures, nervousness, and even death, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned sales of supplements containing ephedrine in April of 2004 and the World Health Organization lobbied to have international restrictions placed on the production and distribution of ephedrine. Metabolife Ultra sells for $19.99/bottle for a three-month supply of 90 capsules.

Active Ingredients

Metabolife Ultra uses two herbs in place of ephedrine called SuperCitrimax® garcinia extract and guarana seed extra:

  • SuperCitrimax® garcinia extract: hydroxycitric acid - suppresses appetite
  • Guarana seed extra: a stimulant that is high in caffeine, which enhances energy and metabolism, and reduces fluid accumulation in the body
  • A combination of vitamins and minerals that are found in everyday foods

The manufacturer suggests taking two pills an hour before every meal for a total of six pills a day.

Product Claims

Manufacturers claim that Metabolife Ultra is a combination of "the finest natural herbs" that burn fat by enhancing the body's metabolism, improving energy levels, and curbing appetite. Since this product is a dietary supplement, it is important to keep in mind that the claims made by the manufacturers of Metabolife Ultra about its effects have not been evaluated by the FDA. The product's website cautions against using Metabolife if pregnant, nursing, or sensitive to caffeine, and they suggest conferring with a health-care professional if you intend on using this product for weight loss. The product information also claims that you will get the best results and be more likely to maintain the weight lost, if you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Scientific Evidence

Metabolife Ultra appears to perform well for many dieters, but researchers are still undecided as to whether these results are largely due to the weight management aid or the exercise and diet modification of the individual using the product. There has also been no research that shows that Metabolife’s “SuperCitrimax” brand is more effective than any other product containing hydroxycitric acid (HCA), nor have there been any studies proving that HCA reduces hunger or aids in weight loss. As far as safety is concerned, the FDA has not found any major negative effects from using hydroxycitric acid or guarana seed extract, other than increased heart rate from caffeine sensitivity. However, there have not been enough studies done to prove this long term. Before using any drugs or supplements, it is always best to carefully evaluate advertiser's claims before using them.

Consumer Feedback

“This product is great. The energy level you receive is great and easy to control with how much you take, no jitters, and also helps with weight loss at the same time. Great product and would highly recommend this to everyone!!”

I took one of their famous diet pills and 15 minutes later had a heart attack. Damage: $40,000 worth of medical bills that no attorney will go after them for.
