A Look at Effortless Weight Loss with Akävar 20/50

By Jennifer Montano, RD, CNSD

For decades, Americans have been infatuated with Europe and the European lifestyle. So much so, that merely stating a product is from Europe can do wonders for its marketability and sales. With European cosmetics, clothes, and cars selling so well in the US, it’s no wonder a surplus of European weight-loss products have crossed the pond.

One in particular that caught my attention was Akävar 20/50. I am not sure if my attention was captured by the exotic bikini clad Euro-beauty gracing the ad, or the umlaut over the ä ensuring me of its Euro-authenticity. But, I do know that I was uncontrollably drawn to examine the ad a bit more closely.

In doing so, I was further awed by the claims of effortless weight loss backed by scientific evidence gathered by top docs, and of course, a money-back guarantee. And to secure our trust in the product and these claims, the ad boldly states, “We could not print it if it weren’t true.” But before exchanging a dollar for a Euro (or half a Euro at this point), and a sensible diet and exercise routine for a pill, let’s examine these printed “truths.”

Effortless Weight Loss

The ad claims those who take Akävar 20/50 can eat all they want and still lose weight. In fact, they claim that simply taking Akävar 20/50 three times per day will “literally cause excess fat to be pulled from bulging parts of your body.” All of this without having to diet or exercise!

Make no mistake, the ingredients in Akävar 20/50 are not fat-finding magnets that magically make love handles disappear. Disappointingly, the main ingredient in Akävar 20/50 is plain ole caffeine. Disguised in exotic herbs such as Yerba mate, xanthine, guarana, and kola nut, Akävar 20/50 is nothing more than a legal stimulant.

Now it is true that stimulants, such as caffeine and its distant cousin cocaine, can decrease appetite. This has the potential to lead to weight loss. However, keep in mind that usually not a lot of weight is lost, and what is lost, will most likely return after the stimulant is not longer taken. And though stimulant can decrease appetite, they can also increase blood pressure, heart murmurs, and insomnia.

Clinical Studies by Top Docs

The ad goes on to claim there is scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of Akävar 20/50. References are made to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study where 23 of the 24 participants taking Akävar 20/50 lost weight without making changes to their diet or exercise patterns. With results this exciting, you would think the study would be readily available for review. However, after many requests, these articles have yet to surface, leaving questions about their authenticity (or existence)!

To make matters worse, the “top doc” promoting Akävar may not be the most reputable source. First, he is not an MD trained in health or science. Instead, he is a PhD trained in psychology. Second, if you do an internet search on his name, Dr. Daniel Mowrey, you can see he is mixed up in a number of lawsuits involving weight-loss supplements and fraud!

The Bottom Line

The real truth about Akävar 20/50 can be summed up by the following:

  • Akävar 20/50 is a very expensive (about $40 for a 20-day supply) caffeine pill
  • Akävar 20/50 can lead to unwanted side-effects
  • There is no scientific evidence to support taking Akävar 20/50 will lead to weight loss
  • The doc supporting Akävar 20/50 may not be so “top”

So there ends our infatuation with European lifestyle related to being thin. Or does it? Perhaps it is the high consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains along with walking and biking as the main mode of transportation that leads to the small Euro-waistline. That would mean that being a healthy weight in Europe comes down to the some ole boring US philosophy of a sensible diet and exercise!
