Exploring Sea-Thin: a Non-Stimulant Weight-Loss Supplement

By Elizabeth Myers, RD

Sea-Thin is a non-stimulant weight-loss supplement that is marketed as “the original marine thermogenic." Sea-Thin is a combination of pomegranate seed oil and fucoxanthin, which is a specially cultivated type of brown marine vegetable grown in the waters of the Canary Islands that increases metabolism and supports fat loss.

Sea-Thin sells for $39.99/bottle of 90 capsules, which is pricey given that the recommended dosage is 3 pills per day with meals.

Ingredients and How it Works

Sea-Thin uses a proprietary blend of two active ingredients in each capsule. They include:

  • Brown seaweed concentrate: contains fucoxanthin – an antioxidant with thermogenic properties
  • Pomegranate seed oil: an antioxidant that works with fucoxanthin to support thermogenesis.

Product Claims vs. Scientific Evidence

These statements were taken from Sea-Thin’s website:

  • “Recent research suggests that natural compounds in marine vegetables can significantly affect fat metabolism and fucoxanthin is one of these key ingredients that, along with diet and exercise, has helped to minimize weight issues among Asian populations where it is consumed the most.”
  • It is a “patent-pending formulation - the only one with human clinical research.”
  • “The research on Sea-Thin was done in conjunction with a calorie-conscious diet.”

Most of the studies I found were done on mice - not humans, and the studies that were done on humans were not clinically significant nor did they analyze how these two active ingredients work synergistically in the human body. In conclusion, there is just not enough credible scientific research done to confirm Sea-Thin’s claims. More than likely, it is diet and exercise that will help one lose weight and keep it off rather than some diet supplement such as Sea-Thin.

User Feedback

“This product put my mother in the hospital for 4 days. After taking it she had horrible upper stomach pain and was taken to the hospital. After reading many reviews. Most of which negative. Due to smelly cloudy brown urine, which is also a sign of kidneys shutting down, I doubt this is a very safe product. I do not think it has been tested fully.”

“I started using Fucothin 6 days ago: 3 softgels a day as directed. I have noticed an immediate decrease in my appetite as well as a decrease in food cravings. I have lost 6 lbs ( I am working out 4 days a week), but 6 lbs in a week is pretty good. I am still eating pretty much what I want, just smaller portions. So, so far, I love this product.”
