The South Beach Diet Online was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston to help individuals manage their weight and get their cholesterol levels under control.
There are three phases of this diet in which you are encouraged to choose “good” carbohydrates and fats, and lean sources of protein. Phase 1 is where you limit carbohydrates and weight loss is started. Phase 2 focuses on reintroducing carbohydrates back into your meal plan. And finally, Phase 3 is for maintenance. Unfortunately, this diet does not provide any tools or recommendations for an exercise plan.
The South Beach Diet Online offers you several tools to help you track your weight, phase, and diet goals. These include online dietitians, live support, a customized meal planner, a restaurant guide, and over 1000 South Beach-approved recipes. Kraft Foods has licensed the South Beach Diet brand name for use on a food product line that meets all the requirements of the diet. These products include cereals, snacks, frozen entrees, salad dressings, and meal replacement bars.
The South Beach Diet Online is $5/week with a four-week minimum commitment, and the first week is free. You may cancel your subscription at any time and receive a reimbursement for the unused portion.
Scientific Evidence
A scientific study was done to compare the South Beach Diet to the more conventional low-calorie, low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet endorsed by the National Cholesterol Education Program and the American Heart Association. This study found that the South Beach Diet supports a greater short-term weight loss and a positive change in cholesterol levels than the conventional diet. However, keep in mind that this particular study was co-written by Dr. Agatston and there have been no studies done thus far to indicate what the long-term effects of this diet are.
Dieter Feedback
The vast majority of feedback from dieters and health-care professionals has been positive:
"Overall I think it is pretty sound. The induction phase of the diet is pretty extreme: It's cutting out a lot of carbohydrate foods. After that, it really emphasizes eating whole foods, whole grains, a lot of fruits and vegetables. It is one of the more nutritionally sound diets out there."
--Andrea Giancoli, R.D. on squeezeoc.com
“It's one of the only diets out there that actually teaches you how to eat healthily for life - plus, the food's yummy! The diet proves that healthy food can taste fantastic, and make you feel great.”
